Former police officer and detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) travels to Russia to help his son, Jack (Jai Courtney), who has been arrested after assassinating Anton (Roman Luknár), a subordinate of Chagarin (Sergei Kolesnikov). Chagarin is a high-ranking but corrupt Russian official, who is planning on incriminating political prisoner and government whistleblower Yuri Komarov (Sebastian Koch) without a fair trial. Chagarin is looking to get hold of a file believed to be in Komarov’s possession. While in court standing trial, an explosion occurs in the courthouse. Jack breaks free with Komarov. John, who happens to be near the courthouse at the time, confronts Jack. Their confrontation turns heated and draws the attention of Chagarin’s henchman, Alik (Radivoje Bukvić). John, Jack and Komarov manage to escape, but are chased by Alik and his gang. After a destructive car chase, John, Jack, and Komarov escape, while Alik and his crew sustain injuries.

Jack, John, and Komarov drive to a safe house. It is then revealed that Jack is an agent working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). At the safe house, another CIA operative asks Komarov about the file’s whereabouts. The file is said to have incriminating evidence against Chagarin, which is what the CIA needs. Komarov recalls having kept the key to the vault containing the file at the place where he and his wife “shared their first dance” – a building in Ukraine. The safe house comes under attack, with the CIA operative being killed. Jack detonates a large portion of the building to facilitate an escape, while John kills off the remaining terrorists. The trio eventually escape and make their way to the key’s hiding place, a ballroom; Komarov has made a call to his daughter, Irina, to meet him there too. When they arrive, John grows suspicious of Irina; his suspicions are proven correct when Alik and his men crash in and tie John and Jack up. Irina confesses to snitching on them for the “millions of dollars” to be gained. Jack manages to break free of his ropes and fight back using a hidden knife and gun. As John, Jack, and Alik’s men exchange gunfire in the ballroom, Alik escapes in a helicopter with Irina and Komarov, who is now a hostage. John and Jack are attacked by incoming fire from the helicopter, but they escape by jumping out the ballroom windows and down a garbage chute to street level; Jack is injured in the process. Father and son share a light moment as John treats Jack’s injury.

That night, the two steal a car full of guns and drive to the vault that houses the file, as earlier revealed by Komarov at the safe house. Alik gets there before they do, and discovers that the hiding place is actually a large room housing crates of enriched uranium. Though seemingly helpless as a hostage, Komarov suddenly shoots Alik in the head, killing him. It is revealed that there was never a file in existence; Komarov and Irina have been manipulating the entire sequence of events since the beginning, in an attempt to obtain the uranium and get revenge on Chagarin for his past betrayal of Komarov. Komarov attempts to escape with the boxes of uranium, but at this point, John and Jack enter the vault, discover his true plot, and take him under arrest. Irina, with another henchman, comes to her father’s rescue. After a heavy gunfire exchange, Jack goes after Yuri while John goes after Irina, who is escaping on a helicopter. Irina tries to protect her father by firing the helicopter’s cannons at Jack, but John is able to bring the helicopter out of balance. In rage, Jack hurls Komarov off the rooftop; the latter falls into the spinning helicopter’s rotors and is killed. John jumps off the helicopter and reunites with Jack inside the building. Wanting to avenge her father, Irina rams the helicopter into the building, destroying the building and killing herself in the process; John and Jack survive by leaping off the building into a large pool of water.

Afterwards, John and Jack return to New York. At the airport, they meet Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), John’s oldest child and Jack’s sister. The reunited family walks off together.
